Book Review: Ink Exchange

Ink Exchange (Wicked Lovely, #2) Ink Exchange by Melissa Marr

My review

rating: 4 of 5 stars
Leslie, a friend to Aislinn (the new Summer Queen from Wicked Lovely), is blind to the world of faeries. Her family life has become unbearable since her mother left, leaving her with an alcoholic father and a drug-addicted brother who had no qualms about selling her to a dealer. At once broken and strong, she is desperately seeking change in her life. When she is attracted to a beautiful tattoo and feels that she must have it, she hopes the tattoo will help her to reclaim her body. She has no way to anticipate the sinister changes the tattoo will bring, binding her closer to Irial, Faery King of the Dark Court.

The writing is significantly improved and more mature than in the earlier Wicked Lovely. The story is dark and deals with difficult, complicated issues including rape and addiction. Leslie wants to stop feeling fear and pain but finds that the price may be too high. Irial is responsible for the survival of his court through chaos and destruction, and needs Leslie to help him do this--but he comes to care for the broken mortal girl and can't help but regret using her. And Niall, another faery formerly of the Dark Court, wants to love and protect Leslie but knows the dangerous consequences if he goes too far.

Read first: Wicked Lovely (The third in the series is Fragile Eternity)
