ABC Reading Challenge Review: The Last Days

The Last Days (Peeps, #2) The Last Days by Scott Westerfeld

My review

rating: 3 of 5 stars
Read first: Peeps

The peeps infection continues to spread in New York and civilization is threatening to topple. Amid this chaos Moz, Pearl and Zahler are determined to start their own band. Unbeknownst to them, they hire an infected peep to be their lead singer. As they play, the darkness below seems to grow and move closer to the surface. One senstive band member fears that it may not be ethical or healthy to play their music for large crowds. If they do, will it launch their careers or end lives?

Much of the book deals with the formation of the band and focuses on music. If you haven't read the first book, you may be as clueless as the characters about what is happening around them and to them for much of the story as references to the parasite are few and subtle. Also, the story is told from several different points-of-view, switching narrators with each chapter. This left me feeling a little disconnected.

For me this book seemed to have less cross-over appeal for adults than did Peeps and lacked the horror-building focus of its prequel.
